There has recently been a lot of talk about CBD oil and it’s possible benefits so the Focus on Disability team has been taking a closer look to see if it can help various health conditions such as inflammation, depression, pain, anxiety and skin conditions such as acne.

First of all we should point out that one, CBD is legal, and two it’s not intoxicating!  It is extracted mainly from the flowers, leaves, stem and stalks of the hemp plant as either an oil or powder.  It can then be mixed into creams, gels and oils.  Capsules and sweets can be taken orally and oils rubbed on to the skin.  CBD can also be sprayed in to the mouth and inhaled.

CBD has been in the news as a possible treatment for epilepsy however research is ongoing for other health benefits.

Is CBD oil safe?

Research into CBD is still in it’s early days however no serious safety concerns have been associated with moderate doses.  You should check with your doctor first to ensure that it is safe and appropriate for to take CBD oil especially if you have any pre-existing conditions or if you are on any medications such as statins, blood thinning medication and calcium channel blockers.

Pregnant or breastfeeding women should not use CBD oil.

So how might it help?

Pain relief: CBD oil has an analgesic effect, meaning it reduces pain perception in the brain. Does CBD work for arthritis? “Animal studies have suggested that CBD has pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory properties, but these effects have not been validated in quality studies in humans. Anecdotally, some people with arthritis who have tried CBD, but not all, report noticeable pain relief, sleep improvement and/or anxiety reduction”.

Anxiety: Reportedly one of the top benefits of CBD oil is how it can ease anxiety and stress in everyday life.  It can improve symptoms of post-traumatic disorder (PTSD) and help with sleep disorders and also can benefit as a relaxation agent.

Anti-depressant:  As CBD oil interacts with the neurotransmitter serotonin, which regulates mood and social behaviour, it has also been shown to be a natural anti-depressant.

Acne and skin conditions: As CBD oil affects the immune system and has an ability to help reduce inflammation, it may therefore offer relief from acne and other inflammatory skin conditions, such as eczema, itching, rashes and psoriasis
