Apply for a Passport – Disabled People

Focus on Disability - For Disabled People, the Elderly and their Carers in the UK

Free services and facilities are available to help you with your passport application if you’re disabled.

Apply online for a UK passport

You can apply for, renew, replace or update your passport and pay for it online.

More Information

You’ll need a debit or credit card to use this service.

It should take 6 weeks to get your first adult passport once your form has been received. For all other application types, it should take 3 weeks.

It can take longer if more information is needed or your application hasn’t been filled out correctly.

You should use a different service if you need your passport urgently.

Don’t book travel until you have a valid passport – doing so is at your own risk.

Other Ways to Apply

You can pick up passport application forms from your local Post Office and apply by post, or use the Post Office Check and Send service.

Passport services if you’re disabled

There are free services and facilities to help you with your passport application if you’re disabled.

If you can’t sign the form

You can get someone to sign the form on your behalf (such as a relative, social services officer or doctor) if your disability means you can’t sign the form yourself – for example you can’t write, or have learning or writing difficulties.

They should sign the declaration and give an explanation of why you can’t sign in both:

  • section 8 of the form, or the additional information box if you apply online
  • a covering letter that they’ve signed and dated

If your child can’t sign their form

If you’re applying for a child aged 12 to 15 who can’t sign the form:

  • leave the signature section blank
  • explain in section 8 of the form (or in the additional information box if you apply online) that the child is unable to sign

The wording “The holder is not required to sign” will be shown in the passport where the signature would normally be.

If you can’t meet the passport photo rules

If you have a disability that means you can’t meet the passport photo requirements, you should:

  • explain in section 8 of the application form, or in the additional information box if you apply online
  • include a letter from your doctor or consultant that says what your condition is and whether it’s permanent or temporary

If you can’t attend an identity interview for a first adult passport

If you can’t have an identity interview because of a mental or physical condition, you should:

  • explain in section 8 of the application form, or in the additional information box if you apply online
  • include a letter from your doctor or consultant that says what your condition is and whether it’s permanent or temporary
