Wheelchair User Booted Out Of Bar – “FIRE RISK”

Access problems never go away as a wheelchair-bound student was carried out of a bar and down a flight of steps by bouncers – for being a fire hazard.

Troy Hitchins, 21, was drinking upstairs with pals when a duty manager said he could only stay if he could stand up.

But because the cerebral palsy sufferer needs sticks to stand to stand two security men were ordered to carry him down.

Talented basketball player Troy was left “disgusted and  humiliated” by his ordeal at the King’s Head, in Harborne, Birmingham.

He accused the pub of discrimination adding: “I felt like a piece of furniture, I was mortified.”

The bar’s general manager Richard Perry apologised for any “ill feeling”.

He said the decision was based on safety grounds, and that Troy’s party was informed they could use the downstairs bar, which they did.

“This highlights the problem of premises being incapable of providing complete access because of cost as much as the ordeal of the  lad socialising with his pals.”
