Self Propelled Wheelchairs

These self propelled wheelchairs (sometimes called manual wheelchairs) are ideal for disabled people who still have good upper body strength on the left, right or both sides.

They can give someone with little or no lower body function, mobility and improved independent living.
Although primarily designed for self use, most have handles for steering by a carer/attendant.

Types:

Bilateral self propelled wheelchairs

For users who can control the wheelchair via the drive rims on the left AND right wheels.

Unilateral self propelled wheelchairs

For users who only have the use of their left or right arm and hand. On these models, which are usually specially ordered, the left or right drive wheel has double drive rims which enables one handed control. Good upper body strength on one side is a prerequisite for self use.
